The Indian Railways has announced a pilot project of providing Internet connectivity (WiFi) on trains. Using Wi-Fi in three rakes of the Howrah Rajdhani Express by September this year, as a pilot project, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

“It is a satellite-based system using a Wi-Fi for distribution of internet bandwidth in coaches and the likely date for implementation of this system is Sep 25, 2012,” said Minister of State for Railways, K.H. Muniyappa. He said the estimated cost of implementation of the project is Rs.6.30 crore.

In terms of functioning, passengers will have to make a requisition to the travelling ticket examiner to access the Internet. The examiner will send the requisition to the central hub and a password will be sent through SMS to the passenger’s mobile phone.
