The upcoming launch of the Apple Watch and the exploding popularity of smartwatches has forced many universities to ban students from wearing watches altogether in exam halls.

A smartwatch makes cheating extremely easy as students could easily view notes on it in the exam hall and give an unfair advantage to them over other students, which is why many universities across the world are banning students from wearing even traditional watches in exam halls.

In reply to BuzzFeed News, London’s City University told the website that it has also joined other universities in banning smartwatches in the exam halls. The university now considers smartwatches equivalent to smartphones and require students to place them in a plastic wallet before the exam starts. When the issue was initially raised last year, the University pondered over manually checking the watch of every student in the exam hall, but that was not a practical solution since each exam hall has over 100 students. Hence, the university decided on banning students from wearing watches completely in exam halls.

Students are already asked to place mobile phones in a plastic wallet under their desk, so we adopted the same procedure for watches. Students either don’t wear them to an exam venue, or they remove the watch in the venue and place it in the plastic wallet.

To make sure students don’t become oblivious of the time in the exam hall, the university has increased the number of wall clocks in the exam halls and has also purchased desk clocks for any student who requests one.
