Since its launch on Friday, March 16, the new iPad, which features Retina display, 4G LTE connectivity A5X chip with quad-core graphics, a 5 megapixel iSight camera, and more bells and whistles than the first space shuttle, Apple announced late Monday that has sold three million units.

The original iPad sold 3,00,000 units in the first day and made it to a million units within 28 days of its launch, while the iPad 2 touched the sales figure of a million units within just a matter of four days. The new iPad is already available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands and will be available in 24 more countries

• Apple sold 1 million iPads in 28 days after the device went on sale in April 2010;
• 2 million iPads were sold in less than 60 days;
• 3 million iPads were sold in 80 days;
• And now, 3 million iPads sold in four days — from March 16 to March 19.

Earlier today, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company saw “record” sales for the new iPad in its opening weekend. The new iPad launched to very positive reviews from the press (which mentioned the device’s Retina display, LTE, and battery life as great selling points) and long lines around the world.
