According to the data compiled by IDC, tablet sales declined for the first time on a YoY basis since the inception of the market in 2010. While Apple shipped 21.4 million iPads in Q4, 2014 and remained the number one tablet vendor in the market, its shipments declined by 4.6 percent from the same period in 2013.

The research firm notes that Apple’s strategy to continue the iPad momentum “have fallen flat so far as the latest generation of the iPad Air and mini offer very minimalistic upgrades over their previous versions. Cannibalization at the bottom from the iPhone and at the top from the Mac appear to be a serious issue for the iPad.”

Samsung was the second largest tablet vendor with a market share of 14.5 percent and shipped 11 million tablets in the last quarter of 2014. Lenovo, ASUS and Amazon came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively, but there total tablet shipments were only in single digits.

It is quite evident from the data that Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the tablet market and it is up to them to push the technology in tablets forward.

IDC noted that while the total tablet shipments declined by 3.2% on a YoY basis, the total tablets shipped increased by 4.4 percent to 229.6 million in the last year.

Despite the decline in tablet shipments in Q4, 2014, IDC expects the overall tablet shipments to further grow in 2015 because of a multitude of factors, including consumers growing taste towards large screen devices and tablets.
