Getting a new smartphone on a postpaid plan usually always means that a credit check is involved, and often enough that means that many potential subscribers are hit with large up-front costs, or denial of service altogether.

While T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, has admitted that the Magenta Carrier was part of that problem, he has also confirmed that is no longer the case, thanks to the brand new “Smartphone Equality” initiative that has just been unveiled. Legere says that it’s “BS” that so many subscribers are left out in the wind when it comes to getting the smartphone they want, or the plan they want, just because a certain number looms over them.

As a result, Smartphone Equality is all about the relationship a subscriber has with T-Mobile and takes that into account, instead of a credit score. The new plan, which will go into effect beginning Sunday, January 25, will make it so that any subscriber under T-Mobile’s umbrella that has paid their bill for 12 months on time will be able to pick a new phone, or a new plan, without having to go through a credit check.

This will work for prepaid subscribers, too, who are looking to jump to a new phone and into a postpaid plan. As long as they pay their bill for 12 months on time, switching to a postpaid plan and a new smartphone should be easier than ever before.

This means that subscribers that fit the bill can get a new smartphone for $0 down with no interest — and no credit check.

What’s more, T-Mobile confirmed that this will work for current subscribers, too. So, if your bill has been paid for 12 months on time when January 25 rolls around, you can immediately take advantage of the Smartphone Equality initiative once it’s given the green light.

This is not only the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do, too,” Legere added. “Fact is, your past payment history is the best way to tell if you’ll make future payments on time. So this is good for customers and good for business.

Smartphone Equality may not have garnered a huge “Un-carrier” event, but it’s certainly a worthwhile proposition from T-Mobile, and does indeed buck the trend that has been in place for years within the mobile industry. It will be interesting to see if any of the other carriers follow suit.
