Swatch CEO Nick Hayek has revealed that the Swiss company plans to launch its own smartwatch within the next three months — pitting it against the Apple Watch, which is slated to go on sale in April.

Hayek also disclosed that the company’s upcoming smartwatch be able to talk to the Internet “without having to be charged” and will also feature support for mobile payments. Initially, mobile payments will only work with Switzerland’s retailers Migros and Coop, though Swatch is in talks with other retailers. The watch will work with Windows and Android based devices with no support for iOS devices initially.

Interestingly, Hayek also divulged that Swatch’s patent applications reached a new record high in 2014 and that all these innovations from the company will show up in “numerous innovative project launches in all segments.” Some of them though will only be making their way to the automobile sector while others, like the one related to battery, will take a few years before they show up in consumer devices.

Swatch’s CEO Hayek was not too confident about smartwatches being revolutionary in 2013 since he found their screens to be too small for any kind of touch interaction. He even said last year that high-end watches from Swatch are already smartwatches because they make the person wearing it look smart.
