News / Internet Supreme Court asks the Indian Govt. to develop solution to block porn sites in India
Can India develop a solution for blocking international pornographic websites? But, will blocking the porn will help in reducing the crime against women?

The Supreme Court has advised the Government of India ( GOI ) to workout a solution with the help of various ministries to come up with a solution to eliminate pornographic content from the web. The GOI had told the supreme court that it is difficult to block international pornographic websites in India.

Earlier, the Indian government had ordered the Internet Service Providers to take down as many as 39 websites for hosting obscene content. The order came in contrast of a petition filed by a Indore-based Advocate Kamlesh Vaswani, who pleads, watching obscene content is not only an offence but also one of the main reasons behind growing of crime against women.

According to a Times of India report, most of the sites blocked are web forums through which users share images and links to download porn content. Some of these sites are also used for hosting and sharing images and files. The report further says the blocked sites are hosted outside India and operate under the US' 18 USC 2257 law.

The petitioner has pointed out that the lack of adequate Internet laws has led to more people accessing such filthy videos. According to Kamalesh Vaswani, more than 20 crore such video clippings are available in the web and are downloaded through the web or accessed through video CDs.
