On Monday, February 9, Microsoft sent out a brand new update for its popular Skype for iPhone. The new software brings the version up to 5.10.

With version 5.10, Skype for iPhone reintroduces a feature that’s been missing for quite some time: URI support for other apps. This means that any app that uses Skype URIs, which allow developers to let their apps work directly with Skype, can now make use of that piece of functionality again. From now on, with the new software installed, selecting a phone number from a business that uses this URI support will have the ability to launch Skype to make that phone call:

Skype 5.10 for iPhone brings support back for Skype URIs, which enable developers to easily use Skype’s messaging and calling infrastructure to start calls and chats straight from their mobile app or mobile website, rather than building their own. As long as the Skype app is installed on an iPhone, when a user taps on a Skype name or phone number, the URI will open the Skype app to connect a call or send a message*, making it faster than ever to reach friends, family or businesses.

For example, if you’re browsing restaurant options on an app or mobile website that utilizes Skype URIs, tapping on the phone number would launch Skype so you could call and make a reservation.

The new update will also let users save contacts right from the phone dialer, just as you might from the stock dialer app on an iPhone. Microsoft says that the app will have better overall chat notifications, and users can also find and save a number from the recent calls list as well.

All in all, the update looks perfect for heavy users of Skype. How often do you use the app?
