Samsung has overtaken Nokia’s spot as the world’s leader of the global cell phone market in the first quarter of the year. Nokia has been the global phone market leader for past 14 years.

The analysts found Samsung had sold 88 million phones in the January-March period while Nokia sold 83 million. Nokia announced its sales total this Wednesday while Samsung will announce its quarterly reports on April 27.

Nokia back in 1998 became the cellphone market leader when it overtook Motorola and for 14 years they continued their domination. Samsung is expected to launch the highly anticipated Galaxy S III soon which will further boost sales while Nokia is trying to capitalize on its Lumia Windows Phone line-up.

Nokia is currently undergoing a major restructure to stem the rot, phasing out its Symbian line of smartphones in favour of a partnership with Microsoft that has produced a line of Lumia smartphones.
