While Apple and Ericsson start 2015 in the courts, Samsung is looking to start the year with a pretty big splash.

According to a report published by Reuters on Wednesday, January 14 and citing an anonymous source, Samsung has recently approached BlackBerry with acquisition in the crosshairs. The report is further corroborated by documents that the publication reportedly has seen, which indicates that Samsung’s offer for BlackBerry approached the $7.5 billion mark. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, as far as the source is concerned, the bid for BlackBerry is all about the company’s extensive portfolio of patents.

The move from Samsung, while obviously geared towards the patents, is also clearly meant to bolster its own rank and file of devices, especially moving forward. The question at this point is, though, if whether or not that patent portfolio, if acquired, will be used to strengthen its Android lineup, or be used to raise the power of its own Tizen OS.

What do you think of a Samsung acquisition of BlackBerry?
