News / Mobile phones Rumor: iPhone 6s to feature an 8-megapixel camera yet again

We have heard quite a bit of rumors about the iPhone 6s featuring a dual-lens camera that will give it a huge jump in image quality. However, according to analyst Jeff Pu, Apple will be once again using an 8MP sensor on the iPhone 6s.

Apple switched to an 8MP resolution sensor with the iPhone 4s in 2011 and has since stuck to that resolution, though it increased the individual pixel size and has used newer generation sensors since then to improve image quality in future versions of the iPhone.

According to Pu, Largan Precision — the biggest camera lens supplier to Apple — will be facing limited growth this year because of Apple decision to use an 8MP sensor on the iPhone 6s. However, he noted that companies, including Apple, will focus on adding Optical Image Stabilisation and decreasing the autofocus time on their future high-end smartphones.

Pu said that the camera specifications of the next-generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 6S, will stay the same as the current iPhone 6 at 8-megapixels, limiting potential catalysts to push Largan’s stock price higher in the second half of the year.

The analyst also noted that Largan’s sales for the month of January came in below expectations because of multiple reasons, including the reduced demand for the Apple’s iPhone and a smaller mix of the iPhone 6 Plus sensors in its shipment to the Cupertino company.

Camera quality has very little to do with the resolution of the sensor as already demonstrated by Apple. Even though the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus come with an 8MP sensor, they perform better than the Galaxy Note 4, LG G3 and other Android smartphones that feature significantly higher resolution sensors. In fact, it is Apple’s combination of an 8MP sensor and larger 1.5u pixels that help the new iPhones in shooting such stellar photos.

Apple could very well switch to an F/2.0 or F/1.8 aperture and add OIS to the iPhone 6s to further improve the image quality of the handset without bumping the camera resolution at all.

Will you be disappointed if Apple stuck to an 8MP sensor on the iPhone 6s?
