Microsoft’s newfound desire for great Android and iOS apps won’t stop at its acquisition of Acompli, it seems. Sources say the software giant is now on the verge of buying Sunrise, one of the best third-party calendar apps on mobile, for “at least” $100 million.

TechCrunch, which was first to report the acquisition, says, “Microsoft will keep the Sunrise apps alive as stand-alone products, while using some of the startup’s technology for its own future products.”

The company has taken a somewhat similar approach to Acompli following its $200 million purchase; it has re-released the original apps in all their glory — including support for third-party email services — on both Android and iOS, however, it has rebranded them to Outlook.

With Sunrise, it’s thought the existing Android, iOS, Mac, and Chrome apps will stick around in their current form, and continue to get updates. But perhaps Microsoft will use the company’s technology to improve its own calendar services.

TechCrunch notes that Microsoft is swapping its traditional strategy of selling Office as a bundle of apps to selling it as a service for both consumers and businesses. Its app acquisitions are thought to be a big part of that, and they could be key to keeping the average user interested.

As things stand, Microsoft has declined to comment on this story, but we should get confirmation once the acquisition is wrapped up.
