India has overtaken the US to become the top global contributor of junk messages, being responsible for relaying one in 10 spam e-mails. While the report noted the overall amount of spam had decreased globally due to better control from ISPs, India’s rise was highlighted because of the growing Internet using population.

The top 12 spam-relaying countries for January to March 2012 are as follows:

1. India-9.3 percent
2. USA – 8.3 percent
3. South Korea – 5.7 percent
4. Indonesia- 5.0 percent
5. Russia- 5.0 percent
6. Italy- 4.9 percent
7. Brazil-4.3 percent
8. Poland-3.9 percent
9. Pakistan-3.3 percent
10. Vietnam-3.2 percent
11. Taiwan-2.9 percent
12. Peru-2.5 percent
13. Others-41.7 percent

Spam is becoming increasingly malicious – not just advertising unwanted goods, but spreading links to malicious websites and computer-infecting malware. Most spam comes from home computers that have been compromised by hackers. India\'s rise to the top spot comes on the back of increasing number of new internet users, which crossed 100 million by end 2011 and is growing rapidly.
