The last title from Sid Meier was Civilization: Beyond Earth, and growing from the success of that title a new entry has been announced: Sid Meier’s Starships. The new game, which is set to debut for Mac, iPad and PC in 2015, will take place within the same universe and story arch as Civilization, and the title is said to offer “cross-connectivity” with individuals who purchased Beyond Earth and buy Starships. The new entry is a way to explore the ideas of what happens after the game’s characters have colonized planets, and is a means to expand the life of the franchise even further.
“When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth. What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth? My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration.“
Within the title, players will take the role of a commander of a fleet of starships, and give the player freedom when it comes to customizing their fleet. The goal of the game is mainly exploration and building up the fleet, while also researching future technology to beef up the ships. Every time a player steps into Starships, the campaign will offer a unique map within the galaxy, and combat missions will be procedurally generated.
Sid Meier’s Starships is set to launch sometime in the early part of 2015, but no exact dates have been provided just yet. Pricing was also not announced.
