The August Smart Lock began shipping at the tail-end of August in 2014, but the device featured only Bluetooth connectivity, which limited the range of the device.

That officially changes with August’s new device, the “Connect” Wi-Fi bridge. With this device, which plugs directly into a wall outlet and takes up a very small amount of space, the Smart Lock from the company can actually connect directly to the internet. As a result, owners of the Smart Lock and the corresponding application can now check up on their lock, even interact with it, from anywhere. Previously, thanks to the Bluetooth “limitation,” owners could only interact with the lock while in close proximity.

August Connect plugs into a power outlet inside the home of an August Smart Lock user and connects to their home wireless network and the Internet. This connection enables several new features such as the ability for a user to check the status of their lock remotely and operate it from the August mobile app for iOS or Android on their smartphone or tablet. This allows users to ‘buzz-in’ guests, and such service providers as contractors, dog-walkers, and others remotely while also receiving notifications around all lock activity.

As aforementioned, this new addition to the system means that owners don’t have to be home to unlock their doors, and can “buzz in” individuals that need access for whatever reason. August is actually releasing a private API at the same time so that third-party companies like Nest, Logitech and others can integrate with August’s devices to automate integrated home entry and more.

As far as pricing goes, the August Connect will run $49.99 when it goes on sale/starts shipping in mid-February. It is up for pre-order right now, though. As for the Smart Lock itself, that is currently listed for $249.99.
