Before its launch, the iPhone 6 was widely believed to ship with a sapphire screen, but that eventually did not turn out to be true. Now, one of Apple’s supplier in China — Desay — has unveiled an Android phone with an “unbreakable” sapphire glass protected display.

Even though Desay’s Magical Mirror X5 sports high-end internals, it has a modest price tag of only $160 — 1/4th of what the iPhone 6 costs. The 6.95mm thin handset sports a quad-core chip from MediaTek, a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera.

In the (weird) promotional video, Desay shows the sapphire display being scratched by a pen, keys, knife and even being thrown in a container where chestnuts are being mixed.

The Magical Mirror X5 is already up for pre-order in China on the largest carrier in the world — China Mobile. Analysts, however, believe that is a marketing stunt from Decay and the handset will only be available in limited quantities as its retail price is not sufficient to make up for its expensive sapphire display.

Decay supplies various components to a number of major companies, including Ford Motors, Apple and more. Nevertheless, the company is not the first to release a phone with a sapphire screen. The crown for that goes to Kyocera’s Brigadier that was released last year in July.

Sapphire is the second hardest material on the earth after diamond. However, they are more brittle than glass as well as heavier, thicker and costlier, which does not really make them ideal to be used in smartphones.
