Many analysts believe that Apple might be closer than ever in overtaking Samsung as the biggest smartphone vendor in the world.

In terms of the number of smartphones shipped, Samsung has been the world’s largest smartphone maker since the third quarter of 2011. However, last year, the Korean company rapidly lost market share to low-end Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi and Micromax, while the demand for Apple’s iPhone reached its peak thanks to the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus with larger screens. To make matters worse for Samsung, its high end handsets like the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Alpha also sold below expectations.

Apple is expected to ship anywhere between 65 to 70million smartphones in the last quarter of 2014 — a growth of over 30% from the same timeframe in 2013. The average selling price (ASP) of the iPhone is also expected to increase because of the new storage tiers offered by Apple and the $100 premium charged by the company for the iPhone 6 Plus.

The October-December quarter is Apple’s largest quarter every year, thanks to the launch of the new iPhones and the holiday season. The company’s smartphone sales then continue to decline in the following quarters.

Apple will be reporting its quarterly financial results later today, which is expected to be its biggest and most profitable quarter ever.

Even if Apple does not overtake Samsung as the world’s largest smartphone vendor in the last quarter of 2014, it will continue to be the most profitable one, which is what ultimately matters, especially with the declining average selling price (ASP) of smartphones.
