Apple and Samsung tied for the largest smartphone vendor in Q4, 2014

Thanks to a record breaking quarter where it shipped 74.5 million iPhones, Apple managed to tie with Samsung for the number one smartphone vendor in the world in Q4, 2014.

According to Strategy Analytics, both Samsung and Apple shipped 74.5 million smartphones in the October-December 2014 quarter. Apple’s smartphone shipment increased by a record 18 percent on a YoY basis that helped it to capture 20 percent market share in the last quarter of 2014.

Samsung also managed to capture 20 percent market share in Q4 2014 by shipping 74.5 million smartphones, though its market share declined by 10 percent compared to the same period in 2013. Motorola and Lenovo combined forces to become the third largest smartphone vendor in the world and captured 6 percent of the marketshare in the last quarter of 2014. Huawei came in fourth and shipped 24.1 million smartphones in 2014 thanks to its rapid growth in China, Africa and other developing countries.

For the full calendar year though, Samsung remained the largest smartphone vendor in the world and shipped a staggering 317.2 million smartphones. Apple came in second and shipped 192.7 million in 2014.

Strategy Analytics also noted that global smartphone shipments grew by 31 percent on a YoY basis to reach a total of 380.1 million in Q4, 2014, with a total of 1.3 billion smartphones being shipped in 2014.

While Apple had its most profitable quarter ever and earned a record net profit of $18 billion, Samsung’s profit plummeted by 27%.
