Seinfeld-AmEx

To promote its support for Apple Pay, American Express has launched a terrific new ad called “Retrospective,” which goes back in time to revisit some of the company’s classic credit card commercials. The 30-second clip features big names like Jerry Seinfeld, Tina Fey, and Jackie Chan.

Created by Ogilvy, the aim of the ad is to showcase that while the way you pay with American Express may be changing, the company’s approach to things like simplicity and security remains the same.

“We leveraged the heritage of our iconic imagery with some of our most notable members,” Allison Silver, VP-marketing at American Express, told AdAge. “It really signals the future of American Express with a nod towards our fun past.”

Silver added that Apple Pay is a “priority message” for the company this year as it encourages its customers to take advantage of Apple’s mobile payment system and the many benefits it brings. Apple Pay will continue to feature in AmEx marketing around the year.

Capital One, MasterCard, Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America have all promoted the service since it made its debut last fall. AmEx may have been late to the party, but it says it has already received great feedback from customers who are using Apple Pay.

AmEx’s new ad debuted on Saturday night during the premiere of The Walking Dead and will be shown again during the NBA All-Star Game next week, but of course, it’s for the U.S. only. If you don’t live in the U.S., or you do but you can’t wait until next week to catch it, it’s embedded below for your enjoyment.
